# 👥 Others Around

Others Around lets the owner decide whether normal nearby citizens can control their iKCScripts Boombox.

This makes it easy to switch between private control and shared control without changing ownership of the Boombox.

The owner always retains full access.

***

### 🔒 Others Around OFF

When **Others Around** is disabled, normal nearby citizens cannot perform protected playback actions.

They can still open the Boombox and view available playback information, but they cannot take control of the music.

This includes actions such as:

* Playing a new URL
* Play and pause
* Stop
* Previous and next
* Seeking
* Changing volume
* Managing the Queue
* Loop
* Shuffle

The default configuration is:

```lua
Config.AllowOthersDefault = false
```

This means a newly placed Boombox starts with normal nearby control disabled unless the owner changes it.

{% hint style="info" %}
Trusted Friends use a separate permission system and can still have control while **Others Around** is OFF.
{% endhint %}

***

### 🌎 Others Around ON

When the owner enables **Others Around**, normal nearby citizens can use supported playback controls.

This is useful for:

* Parties
* Events
* Gatherings
* Clubs
* Hangouts
* Shared music areas

Access remains temporary and distance-based.

A citizen must remain within the configured control distance to continue performing protected actions.

***

### 📏 Control Distance

Others Around does not provide unlimited remote access.

The server validates that the citizen is close enough to the exact Boombox they are attempting to control.

The standard control distance is:

```lua
Config.ControlDistance = 10.0
```

Being able to **hear** a Boombox does not necessarily mean you are close enough to **control** it.

{% hint style="info" %}
Audio distance and control distance are separate settings. A citizen may still hear music after moving outside the permitted control range.
{% endhint %}

***

### 🎛️ What Others Around Can Control

When enabled and within the permitted distance, nearby citizens can use supported music controls such as:

* ▶️ Play
* ⏸️ Pause
* ⏹️ Stop
* ⏮️ Previous
* ⏭️ Next
* ⏩ Seek
* 🔁 Loop
* 🔀 Shuffle
* 🔊 Volume
* 📋 Queue controls

Available actions are still validated by the server before being accepted.

***

### 🔒 What Others Around Cannot Do

Enabling Others Around does **not** transfer ownership.

Other citizens cannot:

* Pick up the Boombox
* Receive the Boombox inventory item
* Become the owner
* Manage the owner's Trusted Friends
* Perform owner-only actions

{% hint style="warning" %}
Only the owner can pick up the physical Boombox, regardless of the Others Around setting.
{% endhint %}

***

### 👥 Trusted Friends

**Trusted Friends** are separate from Others Around.

A Trusted Friend can retain control permission while nearby even when:

```
Others Around = OFF
```

This allows an owner to keep general access disabled while still allowing selected friends to control their Boombox.

For complete information, see:

→ **👥** [**Trusted Friends**](/docs/boombox/features/trusted-friends.md)

***

### 🔐 Permission Priority

Boombox control follows this permission hierarchy:

```
Owner
  ↓
Trusted Friend
  ↓
Others Around
  ↓
View Only
```

#### Owner

Full control and pickup permission.

#### Trusted Friend

Persistent control permission while nearby, even when Others Around is disabled.

#### Others Around

Temporary nearby control while the owner has Others Around enabled.

#### View Only

Can view available playback information but cannot perform protected playback actions.

***

### 🎯 Exact Boombox Permissions

Others Around applies to the **specific Boombox** being controlled.

Every placed Boombox is handled independently.

The server validates:

* The selected Boombox
* The citizen's permission
* Their distance from the Boombox
* The requested action

The resource does not automatically redirect an action to another nearby Boombox.

***

### 🛡️ Server-Side Validation

Others Around is not only a visual interface setting.

Protected actions are validated by the server before they are accepted.

This prevents a citizen from bypassing the interface and controlling a Boombox they are not authorized to use.

{% hint style="success" %}
The owner can safely use Others Around for temporary shared music control without giving up ownership of the Boombox.
{% endhint %}
